Residential refurbishment, Oxford

This Victorian terraced house was dark and cold before refurbishment. The re-design opened the house up in terms of both light and space.

The highly glazed stair tower provides passive cooling and ventilation in summer, drawing in air at its base and funnelling it upwards, where it is expelled through motorised roof-lights.

High levels of insulation were incorporated into the renovated building structure.

A preoccupation of the project was the use of environmentally friendly and recycled materials throughout the new structures, building shell and finishes.

The house is in a conservation area.
